May 2007 | Vol. 25, No. 5 News of the Vascular ProfessionSVS Promotes Ultrasound for Vascular Screening According to the AuntMinnie.com website (4/18/07) for the radiology
and imaging profession, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) has
issued recommendations for the screening of vascular disease. SVS
said that vascular disease screening appears to be beneficial for
people 55 years or older with cardiovascular risk factors such as
a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, high cholesterol,
known cardiovascular disease, or a family history of abdominal aortic
aneurysm (AAA). Specifically, the SVS recommends an ultrasound scan
of the aorta to identify aortic aneurysms, an ultrasound scan of
the carotid arteries to assess stroke risk, and blood pressure measurements
in the legs to identify peripheral arterial disease and risk of
heart disease. Additional details are available on the SVS website
