Sentara Hospitals Celebrate Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month

by Jeanette A. Justice, BS RVT, President, Eastern Virginia Vascular Technologists (EVVT)

At Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital in Virginia, Kathryn Sorrell self proclaimed one whole week in October of Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) as Vascular Ultrasound week. On Tuesday, Oct 18, an education / awareness campaign was set up outside of the hospital’s cafeteria. We had poster presentations for the different type of exams that we perform. We also had a "meet the staff" poster that consisted of photos of our staff with their names and titles. We also displayed some of the many SVU Journal for Vascular Ultrasound issues in which our techs have authored articles. The part I enjoyed the most was setting up the Phillips IU22 ultrasound system and a Parks Doppler ultrasound system to demonstrate various vascular tests on the bystanders. It was so much fun. We had a line of people that extended into the cafeteria. Each day that week we also gave away prizes to the technologist who answered the most vascular trivia questions correctly.

Greater Boston Vascular Technologists Chapter Meets

The Greater Boston Vascular Technologists (GBVT) affiliated chapter held their Fall Symposium in mid-October at the Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, MA. The attendance for the meeting was lighter than usual due to the unusually wet weather and difficult flooding conditions in many local communities. However, the enthusiasm of the attendees more than made up for the low attendance. There were four clinical lectures: Sjirk Westra, MD, Pediatric Radiologist from Massachusetts General Hospital, gave a lecture on Duplex Imaging of the Neo-Natal Head; Joseph Polak, MD, Interventional Radiologist from New England Medical Center, spoke on Aortic and Mesenteric Artery Duplex Imaging; Dr. Javier Romero from Massachusetts General Hospital gave a lecture on Carotid Imaging; and Dr. James Estes, the Medical Director of Vascular Lab at the New England Medical Center, spoke to the group about Venous Imaging by the Vascular Technologist. The accompanying business meeting included a lively discussion about the upcoming Massachusetts legislative bill requiring ultrasound procedures be performed by sonographers registered in that specialty or in an accredited lab. This year’s GBVT election is the first under the new rotating terms of officers approved at the 2004 meeting. The results of that election are as follows:

  • President (2 year term): Kathleen Greene
  • Vice-President (1 year term): Anita Harrington
  • Treasurer (2 year term): Leslie Stone
  • Secretary (1 year term): Ingrid Perry
North Jersey Vascular Association (NJVA) Fall Meeting

Thank you to Nicole Abate and her staff of Hackensack University Medical Center for hosting our NJVA’s annual fall meeting. It was well attended. The chapter acquired 20 new members at this meeting. These were mostly SVU members who were notified of our local chapter through the mailing of NJVA chapter information. Velocity criteria post carotid stenting, pre-and post-operative evaluation of venous insufficiency and dialysis access complications were the forefront runners of a day of very informative and interesting lectures. The discussion on nutrition gave a new insight to the importance of diet and weight control and their effect on the vascular system. The officers from 2004 and 2005 were applauded and thanked for their work and contributions. The new officers for 2006 and 2007 were introduced and were given encouragement for their upcoming term. Jeanette Flannery and Virginia Vyniski remain President and Treasurer, respectfully. Our new Vice President is Carol Cooper from Morristown Memorial Hospital and our new Secretary is Vicky Galofaro from Chilton Memorial Hospital.

Happy holidays to all from the North Jersey Vascular Association.
