September 2005 | Vol. 23, No. 9 Industry NewsIntersocietal Journal Club FormedThe Vascular-web.com website has announced the formation of the first Intersocietal Journal Club on the website. According to Journal Club host Gene Doverspike, RVT, the purpose of the Journal Club is to select articles each month from various vascular journals, namely the Journal for Vascular Ultrasound (JVU) of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU), that are helpful and of interest to persons providing vascular testing. The first Journal Club session on the vascular-web.com website was held on August 11th, and a session will be held the 2nd Thursday of every month. Participants in the Journal Club can download an article to read prior to the online Chat Session with the author of the article. “The goals of the Journal Club are to discuss current journal articles and how they relate to current practices and issues in the vascular diagnostic laboratory, while promoting peer interaction and building of professional relationships,” said Doverspike, who is the Education and Research Sonographer at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. The Club hopes to review one or two articles each month. The next chat session of the Journal Club will be held on Sept. 8 at 8:00 pm eastern. To join the Journal Club, just go to www.vascular-web.com to create your personal account. October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month
Following are the six participating organizations in MUAM October 2005 because we share the common goal of familiarizing and educating the public about medical ultrasound and its importance in health care.
The goal of Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month is to increase the public’s knowledge about medical ultrasound and its many uses in health care. Although much of the general public is familiar with the use of medical ultrasound during pregnancy, many people are unaware that ultrasound can be used throughout all stages of life and for various medical indications. Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month provides ultrasound professionals with the opportunity to educate the public about the many uses of this fast growing technology, as well as a chance to celebrate their profession. The AIUM, ARDMS, ASE, CCI, SDMS, and SVU are encouraging members of the medical community to participate in Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month by familiarizing and educating their patients about medical ultrasound through specially planned activities and educational materials. Obtain more information and a free Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month Promotion Kit at the SVU website. Allied Health Professions Week to be held in NovemberMark your calendars now to celebrate Allied Health Professions Week (AHPW), November 6-12, 2005. New Version of the ICAVL Standards ReleasedThe Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) has announced the final revisions have been made to the 2005 edition of the ICAVL Standards and they are now available on the SVU website (www.icavl.org). The revised ICAVL Standards are divided into six areas: Organization, Extracranial Cerebrovascular, Intracranial Cerebrovascular, Peripheral Arterial, Peripheral Venous, and Visceral Vascular. These are the documents that laboratories must use when preparing for ICAVL accreditation. All laboratories must complete the Organization section. Laboratories may apply in any combination of the five other areas, as suited to the services offered by each laboratory. The revised ICAVL Standards can be downloaded from the ICAVL website (www.icavl.org/icavl/apply/standards.htm). Used Ultrasound Machine for SaleFormer SDMS President Stephen McLaughlin ran his own ultrasound company in the Boston area prior to his passing in January of this year from cancer. (See February 2005 e-Spectrum newsletter for obituary) His wife, Elia, has been put in the position of 'learning the business' and trying to keep things together. She has an extra ultrasound machine that cannot be used with the current business structure that they are trying to sell (they have a multi-year lease and are trying to reduce their debt load...she's willing to take a 'hit' on this machine to get out from under the lease payments). The machine is a GE Logic Book XP System with 3 probes; a linear general purpose probe, a small parts probe, and a trans rectal / trans vaginal probe. The machine is almost new having been acquired in February of this year and was used less than 3 months. While the original selling price was over $40,000, Elia is asking for $25,000 for the equipment. Anyone who may be interested should contact Elia McLaughlin directly (Boston, Mass.) at 781-395-3429.
