OIT Student Selected as First Student Representative for Board of Directors

Since SVU has been focusing on getting more student members for the past two years, at the December 2004 Board of Directors meeting the decision was made to appoint a student representative to the SVU Board in order to provide the Board with a source of information regarding the vascular student perspective. This is a great opportunity for a student member of SVU to learn about the inner workings of the SVU Board of Directors, and in return contribute his/her input and perspective to the SVU Board as someone who is new to the field of vascular ultrasound and SVU.

Recently the Membership Committee met by conference call to review the SVU applications submitted by SVU student members for consideration for the student representative Board position. The Membership Committee selected Robert Sexton, a junior in the Vascular Technology Program at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) in Klamath Falls, OR, to be the first student representative on the SVU Board, effective June 1, 2005. Recently he stepped down as the first president of the Oregon Tech Vascular Association (OTVA), SVU’s first affiliated student chapter. SVU currently has two affiliated student chapters: OTVA and the Philadelphia Regional Vascular Student Chapter (PRVSC) at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, and hopes to add more student chapters this year. Mr. Sexton is scheduled to graduate from OIT in June 2006 with a B.S. degree in vascular technology. He has been a SVU student member since 2003.

As the new student representative on the SVU Board of Directors, Mr. Sexton has been invited to attend the Chicago Board meeting on June 15 with all his travel expenses paid for by SVU. He will serve a one-year, unpaid, non-voting term on the SVU Board of Directors, and will attend the 2005 SVU Annual Conference at the Vascular Annual Meeting 2005 in Chicago, June 16-18, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. All of Mr. Sexton’s travel and hotel expenses will be covered by SVU.

He also was invited to serve on either the SVU Chapters Committee or Membership Committee. Mr. Sexton chose the Chapters Committee. SVU will profile the new Student Board Representative in a future issue of e-Spectrum. At the conclusion of the Mr. Sexton’s year-long appointment to the SVU Board, he will be expected to write an article for e-Spectrum describing his experiences with SVU Board and committee service.

The only requirements for a student to apply to SVU for this unique opportunity are: (1) current enrollment in an accredited ultrasound program, and (2) student membership in SVU, which is a great value at only $25/year. SVU plans to solicit a new student representative early in 2006 for a new one-year term on the SVU Board of Directors, starting in June 2006.
