January 2005 | Vol. 23, No. 1 Chapter Newsby Shelly Burns, RVT, LPNChapters Committee ChairTel. 330-375-3288E-mail: BurnsS@summa-health.orgHouston Society of Non-Invasive Vascular Technology Chapter (HSNIVT)The Houston chapter was very busy in 2004. We elected new officers in June 2004 and they took office in July. Because the chapter had been failing for several years there was a great deal of organizational concerns to attend to. We have resubmitted paperwork to get our tax-exempt status reinstated, and are in the process of developing a new website (www.houstonsnivt.org). We had a retreat with the officers to review and revise the chapter Bylaws that had been written in the mid-1980's. The chapter also is developing a program to try to provide scholarships to students and officers to attend the SVU national annual conference. We have had four education meetings that included topics like vascular sonographer injuries, venous incompetence, contrast and 3D. Officers this year are Cynthia Hernandez, President; Karen Broadbent, Vice President: Yocasta Ovieda, Treasurer; and Dalia Demarco, Secretary. For more information on the HSNIVT, please contact President Cynthia Hernandez at Cynthia_Hernandez@hchd.tmc.edu. Northern Ohio Vascular Association (NOVA)The Northern Ohio Vascular Association held its annual fall meeting on November 6th at Tri-C Community College. The program included a talk by Dr. Ellen Mayer-Sabik, a clinical cardiologist from the Cleveland Clinic, on “Women and Heart Disease”; Angela Jagan, the NOVA President, spoke on “Venous Insufficiency”; Edward Taylor JD and Sandra M. Difranco RN, JD, spoke on “Charting on the Medical Record for Sonographers”; Dr. Stuart Morrison, from the Cleveland Clinic, spoke on “Pediatric GI Imaging”; and Charlene Croyts spoke on “Sonographic Appearances of Typical and Atypical GYN Neoplasms.”
Tri-C Community College and NOVA have been working in adjunct for the past two years to promote vascular technology in the community and to students. To incorporate the students into the meeting, a poster contest was held for the Diagnostic Vascular Sonography program. The 1st place winning poster on “RAYNAUDS” was done by second year student Korrin Justik (left) of Medina, OH, and first year student Mindi Mendenhall of Brunswick, OH. First year student Cynthia White (left) of Medina, OH and second year student Christopher Marshall of Lakewood, OH did the 2nd place winning poster on “POPLITEAL ANEURYSM”. Both groups of winning students at Cuyahoga Community College received a $50 gift certificate from NOVA for the college bookstore. For more information on NOVA, please contact Angela Jagan at ambenet@aol.com.
