President’s Message
Be Part of a Great Team
by George L. Berdejo, BA RVT FSVU
Greetings,
Members of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, it is with great pleasure and anticipation that I write this President’s Message.
I take great pleasure and pride in the honor of being your President and your advocate. It has been a challenging and exciting first eight months. Thanks to the efforts of the members of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and the staff at the National Office, the leadership of your Society has accomplished many of the initiatives that it set forth to accomplish when this term began in January of 2004. I also wish to extend thanks and to acknowledge the efforts of non-board members who have been part of the success that we have already experienced. Thank you for this opportunity.
However, the challenge continues. We must continue to hold unswervingly to the promise of success that will come in the fulfillment of our Strategic Plan, Vision 2005. It is also therefore with great anticipation that I write and look forward to the next 18 months of leadership and service to the Society and its membership.
No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined. In order to see the Society’s Vision come to fruition several things will need to happen. Some have already occurred. The Society’s leadership and its membership will have to:
- Maximize personal potential. Not coincidentally, this is an area that the Leadership has targeted in its Strategic Plan via several different programs. Key to this initiative is our desire to create and implement a mentoring program.
- Mentoring is vital in order to pass on a legacy of excellence.
- Mentoring provides wisdom and understanding to a less experienced colleague.
- Many great leaders are where they are because someone in a position above them decided to mentor them and guide their paths.
- Mentoring will strengthen and perpetuate the legacy of this Society
- Deploy its resources optimally. I believe this to be a strength of this Society. For many years the Leadership of the SVU has recognized and availed itself of the talents and strengths of its membership. We must continue this pattern in order to continue to be effective.
- Have a Vision for the future. The future belongs to those who see the possibilities before they become obvious. Vision is the motivational force that creates great leaders and outstanding organizations. Vision provides a design for the future. Vision brings focus and direction. Vision gives team members direction and confidence.
- “Buy” into the Vision. Communication of values is important in order to achieve the highest potential. Since assuming the Presidency of this great Society, Vision 2005 has been one of two common themes of my communications to the membership. The Vision has been made clear and accounts for the needs of this membership both now and for the future. The time has come for this Society to take the vision and run with it. The Vision has been conceptualized by the Leadership and we have entrusted the management of its various initiatives to a reliable “Team” of men and women who now seek your help to advance its agenda.
- Understand, enable and encourage Team members. Shared values and needs, define a “Team.” As a member of the SVU, we consider you part of the team. In order to achieve our objectives, we must:
- Do vigorous and organized work. Anonymous Quote: “The Way to Get to the Top, is to Get off Your Bottom.” SVU’s Vision will require much hard work and dedication. In this Vision, everyone plays an important role. The leadership of this Society is prepared to work with you and provide you with the resources that are necessary to advance the Vision.
- The team must be solution focused. We must look at challenges as opportunities to grow and not reasons to quit and visualize future success as an agent of motivation.
- Be Service Oriented. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he or she gave of himself. You will experience fulfillment through your contribution.
September marks Labor Day, and the “unofficial” end of the Summer season for many of us. For the Society for Vascular Ultrasound and its membership, it marks the beginning of a stretch run; a run that must include outreach to both lost and potential new members. We seek to close this calendar year with 100% member renewal rate and an increase in the number of new members over what we saw in calendar year 2003. This brings me to the second common theme in my communications, SVU’s membership recruitment theme, Each One (current member) Reach One (new or lost member)our goal for 2004, the year of multiplication of membership for the SVU.
Every day in some way, you are part of a team. The question is not, will you participate in something that involves others? The question is, will your involvement with others be successful? In order for our Vision to be successful we need your help. Be part of a great team and a great strategic plan, Vision 2005.
Thanks for your support of SVU!
