LANHAM, MD, June 30, 2005—The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) presented the following awards at the 28th SVU Annual Conference during the 2005 Vascular Annual Meeting, June 16-18, 2005 in Chicago, IL. SCIENTIFIC AWARDSThe Dr. Alex Chao, MD, Young Investigator’s Award for excellence in a scientific research paper in vascular technology was presented to Patrick Stone, MD, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, for his scientific paper on “The Impact of Postoperative Duplex Surveillance Following Radiofrequency Ablation of the Greater Saphenous Vein.” First presented in 2004, this SVU award is named in honor of Dr. Alex Chao, a vascular surgeon who died suddenly in 2003 at the age of 37 of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) acquired from a patient he had treated in Singapore. The Dr. Alex Chao Award was sponsored for a second year by Philips Ultrasound in Bothell, WA. The D.E. Strandness, MD, Scientific Award for the outstanding oral presentation of scientific research in vascular technology was presented to Jaqueline Barretto, MD, Serviço de Ecocardiografia e Doppler Vascular, Hospital São Lucas, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, for her scientific paper on “Extracranial Carotid and Vertebral Artery Ultrasonography: Restive Indices for Diagnosing Cerebral Brain Death.” Parks Medical Electronics, Aloha, OR, sponsored the 2005 D.E. Strandness, MD Scientific Award for excellence in oral presentation. This award is named in honor of D.E. Strandness, the acknowledged “Father of Noninvasive Diagnosis,” who died in January 2002. Holly Beals, BS RVT, Vascular Technologist, University of Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA, won two awards: the First-Time Presenters Award for SVU Members sponsored by Red River Valley Vascular Society (RRVVS) and the Excellence in Oral Clinical Presentation Award sponsored by Phoenix Cardiovascular Inc. Both awards were bestowed for her excellent presentation in the Clinical Oral Papers general session on “Duplex Scanning for the Detection and Follow-up of Iliac Artery Aneurysms and Pseudoaneurysms Amenable to Endovascular Therapy.” POSTER AWARDSThere were three SVU poster awards given in Chicago: The Excellence in Case Study Poster Presentation Award was given to Courtney Nelms, BS RVT RDMS, Vascular and Transplant Specialists, Norfolk, VA, for her case study poster titled “Does a Monophasic Femoral Waveform Always Indicate AortoIliac Disease?” Suncoast Society of Vascular Technology (SSVT) sponsored this poster award. Best Student Poster Presentation Award was given to Parveen N. Joseph, BA, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, for her poster on “Examining the Brachial Artery Reactivity Curve Measured by B-Mode Ultrasound in the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) Pilot Study.” This award was sponsored by DataStar Systems, Inc. of Crystal Lake, IL. The Excellence in a Scientific Poster Presentation Award was given to Janice E. Giuca, BSN RVT, Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT, for her poster on “Lower Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis: Can an Emergent Referral System be Improved?” Sponsorship of this poster award was by www.vascular-web.com. LEADERSHIP AWARDPatricia S. Marques, RN RVT FSVU, was presented with the 2005 SVU Leadership Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership and truly visionary work as 2000-2001 SVU President and on the SVU Government Relations Committee. She is currently Director of Clinical Development at the Vascular Associates Laboratory, Baton Rouge, LA. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDSThe Distinguished Service Award was established in 1987 and recognizes meritorious service by any member. Kathleen A. Carter, BSN RN RVT FSVU, received a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her meritorious service to SVU as a past Director on the SVU Board, as the current SVU Secretary, her work on several SVU’s Committees, and as Chair of the Annual Conference Committee for the past two years. In addition, as a result of her work with ARDMS for several years, she has helped to raise the standards of the vascular ultrasound profession. Michael W. Schwebler, MBA RVT, received a Distinguished Service Award for his meritorious service to SVU as a Director on the SVU Board, current Vice President, and former Chair of SVU’s Membership Committee for several years, and for his dedicated efforts to develop a student outreach program which has resulted in more than 200 new vascular student members within the past two years. He also developed a Student Profile Directory form for the SVU website to help students get their first professional job upon graduation. CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATIONThe Certificate of Appreciation is bestowed upon individuals or groups in recognition of creative endeavor or outstanding achievement in promoting noninvasive vascular technology. Terrence Case, PA Med RVT, Program Director, Assistant Professor, Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his innovative leadership in developing a four-year B.S. degree program in vascular technology at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This is one of only three four-year vascular technology degree programs in the U.S. He also is recognized for keeping the high standards for a credentialing exam and for always being accessible and enthusiastic about the vascular ultrasound profession and SVU. Another Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Sandra L. Katanick, AS RN RVT FSVU CAE, Executive Director, ICAVL, Columbia, MD, in recognition of her pioneering efforts in developing an accreditation process for vascular laboratories by defining minimal requirements for a vascular laboratory to provide high quality care to consumers. There are now 1100 accredited vascular labs. She and ICAVL also have supported the CQU on its efforts to foster payment policies that support payment only for quality vascular testing through a laboratory accreditation and/or technologist/sonographer credentialing requirement. THREE NEW SVU FELLOWS ANNOUNCED AT ANNUAL CONFERENCEFellows Subcommittee Chair Michael W. Schwebler, MBA RVT, announced the selection of three new SVU Fellows for 2005. Fellows are SVU members recognized for their many outstanding contributions to the Society as well as to the vascular ultrasound profession. They are considered a unique resource for the Society in terms on promoting the benefits of SVU membership to others in the vascular ultrasound profession, and in supporting the many other efforts of the Society. CHAPTER AWARDSShelly Burns, LPN RVT, Chair of the Chapters Committee, presented the 2005 SVU Chapter Awards. The 2005 SVU Outstanding Chapter Individual Recognition Award was presented to Margaret M. Park, RVT RDCS, from Brooklyn, Ohio, in recognition of her outstanding work as Secretary for the Northern Ohio Vascular Association for the past several years where she has consistently gone beyond the scope of her responsibilities in serving the NOVA members and SVU. There was a tie between the North Jersey Vascular Association (NJVA) and Northern Ohio Vascular Association (NOVA) for the 2005 Outstanding SVU Affiliated Chapter Award. These chapters were chosen for their continued support and dedication to SVU. Accepting for NOVA was Angela Jagan, RN RVT, and accepting for the NJVA was Jeanette Flannery, RVT RDMS. SVU looks forward with great anticipation to next year’s Annual Conference on June 1-3, 2006 in Philadelphia, PA at the Philadelphia Convention Center.
