LANHAM, MD, June 10, 2005 – The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) has published the second quarter June 2005 issue of The Journal for Vascular Ultrasound (JVU), its quarterly peer-reviewed journal.

This June JVU issue features 5 scientific articles and 2 case reports. Among these is the scientific paper that won an award last year at the 2004 Society for Vascular Ultrasound’s 27th Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA. The first Dr. Alex Chao - Young Investigator’s Award for excellence in a scientific research paper in vascular technology was presented to Patrick Stone, MD, Chief General Surgery Resident at West Virginia University (Charleston Division). Dr. Stone won this prestigious award for his scientific paper on “ Selective Use of Duplex Ultrasound after Successful Thrombin Injection of Pseudoaneurysms.” The 2004 Dr. Alex Chao Award was sponsored by Philips Ultrasound, Bothell, WA.

The Dr. Alex Chao - Young Investigator’s Award is a new SVU award started in 2004 and dedicated in memory of Dr. Alex Chao, a vascular surgeon who died on April 22, 2004 at the age of 37 of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) acquired from a patient he had treated in Singapore. SARS first emerged in Southern China in 2002. SARS has infected more than 8,000 people in nearly 30 countries and killed nearly 800. Dr. Chao had strong links with Australia and at the time of his death, he was actively promoting linkage between the Australian Society for Vascular Ultrasound in Medicine and the Society for Vascular Ultrasound with the Medical Ultrasound Society of Singapore.
