Getting Acquainted

Thanks to the Chapter Presidents for taking the time to speak with Jeanette Flannery this past month regarding your chapter. We know how busy your days can be. We would like to keep this line of communication on-going between us, your regional advisors and your chapters. Any questions or concerns regarding your chapter can be directed to your regional advisor, Chapters Subcommittee Co-Chair Koko Park, or Chair Jeanette Flannery. If you need the name of your regional advisor, please contact Koko or Jeanette.

New Student Member Accepts Board Position

Congratulations to Bonnie August, the newly appointed student representative to the 2008 SVU Board of Directors. Bonnie is a member of the Northern Ohio Vascular Association and a first year student in the DMS program at Cuyahoga Community College. Bonita also is a member of the college Diagnostic Medical Sonography Advisory Board. A serious contingent in the vascular realm, she is also a member of SVU, AIUM, and SDMS. Her year-long term begins with the June 4th SVU Board meeting in San Diego.

Chapter’s Breakfast

The SVU Chapters’ Breakfast will be held on Friday, June 7, from 7-8:15 am in Room 17B on the Mezzanine level at the San Diego Conference Center. We are looking forward to an excellent turnout.

We have all experienced some type of difficulty within our geographical area, whether it is scheduling a meeting, member participation, or financial concerns. By meeting people from other chapters and discussing these issues we may be able to help each other; which is what our society is all about.

Generous donations have been made by the Northern Ohio Vascular Association (NOVA) and the North Jersey Vascular Association (NJVA) Chapters. All Chapters are encouraged to assist with sponsoring our breakfast by making a contribution to SVU. Donations will help cover the cost of the meeting room and buffet breakfast. In turn your contribution keeps down the cost of registration for the national meeting, and provides a nice atmosphere for all SVU members to network and meet new friends. Donations can be sent to SVU, Attn: Missi McLean at the national office. Please indicate that the donation is to be used for the Chapters Breakfast. We thank you in advance for your contributions and hope to see you at the breakfast.

Individual Recognition Award

Nominations for the SVU Chapter Individual Recognition Award are being accepted until May 12. Surely, there is a member of your Chapter that deserves this special recognition for their volunteer service and dedication to your Chapter. Please e mail your nominations with a short paragraph why this person deserves nominated to Jeanette (jeflannery@sbhcs.com) or to Koko (parkm@ccf.org) prior to May 12.

Northern Ohio Vascular Association

NOVA is excited to announce that their website is now complete and can be accessed at www.svunet.org -- select vascular community, select affiliated chapters, select chapter news. It is not required to be an SVU member to view the website, so this is a potential source to inspire new members to both SVU and your chapter. Setting up the web page was fairly simple and SVU provides a set of directions easy to follow in the process. A degree in PC 101 is not required! Please take a moment to check out NOVA’s and the other individual chapter website pages. Each interested chapter can develop their own individual design. NOVA has implemented a new LOGO in the process. Instructions on how your Chapter can join in and get started can be found on the SVU members website (www.svu.net). NOVA is interested in ideas to increase member involvement, find reliable officers, and interesting topics for discussion at our symposia. Please feel free to contact any officer, our e-mail and phone contact can be found on our web page!

The SVU Vascular Ultrasound Advanced Interpretation Course will be held in NOVA’s hometown, Cleveland, OH, on September 12-14. Course and agenda information is available on the SVU website. NOVA’s fall meeting is planned for Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Southwest General Hospital and Medical Center in Middleberg Heights, OH.

Congratulations to Jean Beckner, NOVA’s student liaison and membership chair for acquiring her Masters Degree in Health Sciences, and to our Secretary Wendy Goetz on her recent engagement and completion of her Bachelor of Science Degree from OIT.

NOVA welcomes Mike Trinovich, Sandy Yesenko, and Sue Whitelaw as new Board members for the 2008-2009 term.

Eastern Virginia Vascular Technologists

Thanks to their dedicated members, the Eastern Virginia Vascular Technologist (EVVT) affiliated chapter is back up and running. Their first spring meeting in over a year was hosted recently by Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Dr. Parent, a Vascular and Transplant Specialist, gave a wonderful lecture on Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Phillips Ultrasound gave a very informative presentation on workplace injuries. This presentation was followed by a Licensed Physical Therapist who demonstrated various exercises and stretches that could be done to counteract all the physical demands of our job. This educational meeting was truly beneficial to all that attended.

Our business meeting was a total success. Our new officers are: President Elect Jim Alexander; Secretary Elect Julie Benefield; Vice President Francine Jenkins, and Treasurer Heather Copeland. EVVT will be sponsoring Jim Alexander’s trip to attend the national SVU Annual Conference in June in San Diego. We are truly happy to have him as our new President Elect. EVVT would like to thank Wendy Michalski, our secretary, and Beverly Oglesby, our past president, for this meeting.
